ARCHITECTURE SELECTION FOR PROJECT

After my initial internet research to find examples of modern indigenous architecture and a chat with my lecturer at uni, I have narrowed down my choices in buildings for the purpose of my project.  It makes sense to me to look within my own backyard so I am going to explore the wonderful structures various Aboriginal organisations have created in Western Australia.  I am excited that this project will give me the opportunity to travel to parts of my state that I have not visited yet and meet the people whose vision lead to wonderful and inspirational buildings to serve their communities.

The buildings I hope to study are:

Gwoonwardu Mia
Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage & Cultural Centre
Canarvon

Wangka Maya, Pilbara Aboriginal
Language Center

Karijini Visitor Centre

Tjulyuru Cultural and Civic Centre
Warburton

I may revise or extend this selection to include examples from the South West of the state, dependant upon my ability to engage with the Aboriginal organisations who own these buildings, and my own time/financial constraints.  I do need to continue my initial research into contemporary architecture in Western Australia to seek out more examples before I completely settle upon my project choices.  But, its great to have got this far...

PROJECT OUTLINE

I am a student at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, W.A., studying History and Anthropology, which I will complete this year.  I am hoping I will get into the Honour's program next year which requires a dissertation proposal to be submitted late this year.  As part of my research journey I intend to catalogue images and information on examples of modern indigenous architecture in this blog, primarily for my own use but I am content if others find it a useful source.
